    Compressed air is one of the most important types of energy. Even smallest leaks can lead to high costs in the course of time. Compressed air losses in a robot cell with different tools are to be minimised. The compressed air supply consists of two compressed air circuits (6 and 12 bar), which are to be monitored separately. In case of compressed air losses, an error message is to be sent to the maintenance staff.

    In both compressed air lines, compressed air meters of the type SD8000 are installed. They continuously monitor the compressed air consumption - during production as well as in quiescent condition. There are limit values for both operating states. An error message is generated when the limits are exceeded.

    Exact measured values enable a consumption-oriented compressed air supply. With the information about the current consumption the system could be optimised: Consumption was halved using a simple low-cost electrical valve and a switch-off system depending on requirement. This optimisation was only possible after the compressed air consumption was determined. The additional leakage monitoring detects very small leaks, which can then be removed quickly.     Grinding is an important step in the production of cam shafts. The surface quality achieved here is decisive for the quality of the shafts. To assure a consistently high precision during the grinding process, coolant emulsion must be permanently supplied.

    In the supply pipe of the plant, the flow of the emulsion is monitored using a type SI5000 flow sensor. If the coolant supply is interrupted, the grinding process is stopped.

Therefore, the optimisation of its consumption and the knowledge where the consumption takes place is increasingly important. Huge cost savings can be made by repairing leaks.

    The compressed air of the pneumatic cylinders is monitored by the efector metris compressed air meter (SD series). efector metris is based on the calorimetric measuring principle. It incorporates two temperature-dependent measuring elements which are inserted into the pipe. One element is heated, the second is used as a reference for the medium temperature. The flowing medium cools down the heated measuring element. The heating power which is employed is proportional to the volumetric flow. The mechanical structure, combined with modern microprocessor technology provides a multitude of applications, evaluations and an intelligent signal processing.

    With the efector metris compressed air consumption meter, ifm electronic provides the user with a low-cost opportunity to precisely measure the current as well as the total consumption. To do so, the sensor is mounted and adjusted in a pipe length at the factory. Due to the high sensitivity even smallest quantities, like those which for example occur in case of leakage, are detected at an early stage and can be remedied. Binary, analogue and pulse outputs, the display of current and accumulated flow as well as further functions provide a variety of options to gain informative measurement data and to process them in the control system or in the process. The fast response time of 100 milliseconds also permits the detection of quick changes or compressed air peaks. Furthermore, efector metris distinguishes itself by its high measurement dynamics of 1 : 300. The measuring principle as well as the constructive design of the sensors make a measuring accuracy of ± 3% of the measuring value + 0.3% of the final value of the measuring range possible.

    During conveyance of liquid foods such as dairy products or beverages the product flow has to be monitored. An interrupton of the product flow can cause considerable damage and downtime.

    Due to its high protection rating IP 69K the robust stainless steel housing provides high security even in harsh

    environments. Adjustment to the flow and setting of the switch points are carried out by simply pressing a pushbutton. A multicolour LED locally indicates flow and the switch points. The high repeatability of the switch points offers an optimum choice for use. The sensor can be individually adjusted using the teach function. Electronic locking of the settings provides additional safety. The flow sensor is suitable for medium temperatures up to 120°C. Thanks to a broad selection of process adapters the flow sensors can easily be integrated in almost any application.
