Grinding is an important step in the production of cam shafts. The surface quality achieved here is decisive for the quality of the shafts. To assure a consistently high precision during the grinding process, coolant emulsion must be permanently supplied.

In the supply pipe of the plant, the flow of the emulsion is monitored using a type SI5000 flow sensor. If the coolant supply is interrupted, the grinding process is stopped.

As a by-product of machining workpieces, cutting machine tools produce a significant amount of swarf for which there is no use. But given that the swarf fills such a large volume, it is necessary to permanently discharge it into a swarf hopper because they would otherwise disrupt the production of further workpieces. The level in this swarf hopper needs to be permanently monitored.

As the edges of the swarf are very sharp an optical solution was chosen here, to stay out of contact with the swarf. Using the optical distance sensor O1D100, the level is
detected from above. When the maximum level is reached, the sensor provides a signal for emptying of the swarf hopper.

In a suspension strut assembly line brake disks are placed on workpiece carriers for further assembly. The placement position is defined by a pitch circle. Before assembly, it has to be ensured that the brake disks are in the correct position.

The ifm vision sensor monitors the exact position of the brake disk. The next assembly step is only enabled if the position is correct.

The level in a hydraulic power pack must be continuously monitored. If for example a loss of oil occurs due to leakage, the system must be stopped before damage or production interruption occurs.
